John Pierce, a prosperous farmer of near Waynetown passed away this morning at 10:30 o'clock at Culver Union Hospital after a week's illness, suffering from an abcess of the head. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Waynetown and Red Men and Odd Fellows lodges. He was a highly respected citizen of the community in which he lived and a successful farmer. Mr. Pierce was born Sept 13, 1857, the son of James and Lydia Tracy Pierce, near Waynetown, and has spent the greater part of his life in that vicinity. He was married Jan 25, 1888 to Miss Mary Turvey, who survives him. He is also survived by two sons, Virgil and Wilford Pierce, both of Waynetown, one grandchild, one brother, Joe Pierce of Wayentown and two sisters, Mrs. laura Birdsell of Waynetown, and Mrs. Julia Saxon of Hartford City. The funeral service will be held at the Waynetown Christian Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Sam Smith of Ladoga.

John Pierce, after only a brief illness of a few days died Friday night at Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville where he had been taken for an operation as the last hope to save his life a few hours before his death. On Monday he was not feeling so well as usual and complained of his head but noting serious was thought of his condition through the week until Friday evening he took suddenly and seriously worse and the physician decided the only chance for his life was in an operation. The trouble was due to a mastoid tumor but the operation failed to give the relief hoped for and he died shortly after without having returned to consciousness.  John Pierce, son of James and Lydia Tracey Pierce, was born on a farm one mile north of Waynetown, Sept 13th, 1857.  Here he grew to manhood and on January 25, 1888 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Turvey, and to this union two children were born, two sons, Virgil and Wilfred.  After his marriage he and his wife began housekeeping on the farm and have continued to live happily together for all these years.  He united with the Baptist Church of this place when a young man, under the pastorate of Rev. CJ Bowles. He was also a member of the Waynetown Detective Association, the Modern Woodmen, Independent Order of Red Men, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a devoted husband, kind father, and to his only grandchild a most devoted grandfather. His last visit to Waynetown was made in order that he might visit with his little grandson. For many years past his health has not been good, but at all times when able looked after his farm work. John Pierce was a quiet, industrious, unpretentious citizen and lived out the life of a good citizen in the community of his birth. He was 62 years 2 months 23 days old and in his death leaves a widow, two sons, one grandchild and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Birdcell of this place, and Mrs. Julia Saxon of Hartford City and one brother, Joe Pierce of this place and other relatives and many friends. The funeral services were conducted from the Christian Church Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock by Rev. SG Smith of Ladoga. Interment was made in the family lot at the Masonic Cemetery.
